Structural Engineer

Aztec West, Bristol

Are you a qualified engineer? Do you have knowledge and experience with Structural Engineering and design? Are you looking to develop your expertise and build experience in the exciting and challenging environment of nuclear new build?

If so, join us as a Structural Engineer and you’ll join one of the most exciting and ambitious projects within EDF, as we continue to lead the rebirth of nuclear in the UK.

The Opportunity

EDF EPR Engineering UK (EPR-E) is tasked with delivering the design for several nuclear island (NI) buildings, systems, and equipment contracts for the Hinkley Point C EPR Project. This involves working through an integrated team, supporting HPC construction and commissioning efforts, and preparing design replication feasibility and engineering activities for the Sizewell C Project. As a result, a Technical Directorate is being established to oversee the engineering disciplines and technical expertise needed to successfully deliver these projects through EPR-E’s integrated teams.

We are looking for a Structural Engineer to manage and design their own scope of work, focusing on delivering design information for the Secondary Steelwork scope at Hinkley Point C (HPC). Working within a small engineering team under the guidance of a Senior Engineer, you will collaborate with a broader group of design coordinators and engineers across multiple disciplines.

Pay, benefits and culture

Alongside a salary between £52,000 to £55,000 (Grade B), and a market-leading pension scheme, your package will include a range of benefits, from the big and formal to the small and personal.

We’re talking about everything from enhanced parental leave to electric vehicle leasing, health insurance to product discounts, critical illness insurance to technology vouchers, gym membership to season ticket loans.

At EDF UK, we embrace flexibility while recognising that everyone's working needs are different. Whether you're in our office spaces, on site, or working remotely, we promote an environment that supports collaboration, connection, and comfort. No matter where you are, our priority is to make sure you feel safe, valued, and celebrated.

Here, we do right by each other and everyone’s welcome. We’re on an action-oriented journey, championing equity, diversity, and inclusion. We’d like our future workforce to have an equal gender balance, represent a broad mix of people from minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ+, those with a disability and supporting social mobility.

We’re a disability confident employer and we’ll do all we can to help with your application. Please let us know if you need to request reasonable adjustments.

We take pride in fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment, where the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our employees drive fresh thinking and innovation. We understand that success means different things to different people. We believe there are multiple definitions of what it means to succeed. That’s why we support you to pursue a career that’s unique to you. Because success is personal.

What you’ll be doing

As the Structural Engineer for the Secondary Steelwork scope, you will be responsible for designing critical interfaces between reinforced concrete building structures and specialist equipment essential for the operation of the HPC nuclear power plant. This scope plays a vital role in the project's commissioning phase, as the Secondary Steelwork—comprising platforms, towers, ladders, and stairs—provides necessary access for commissioning during construction and ongoing maintenance during operation.

Each design is unique, tailored to the specific requirements of the related equipment and surrounding structures. This creates a dynamic and complex design environment with extreme loading conditions, diverse operational requirements, and the need to consider constructability and installation within a fast-paced delivery setting.

Who you are

We are seeking a candidate with an engineering degree in a relevant discipline and a solid understanding of basic structural analysis, including bending moment, shear force, and deflection calculations without relying on software. You will have experience working in complex environments, with strong planning and organisational skills to successfully deliver projects. You should be confident in presenting to experienced audiences, possess excellent problem-solving abilities, and demonstrate clear communication skills. Additionally, commercial awareness and an understanding of design change processes within a regulated industry are essential.

You will be capable of managing your own workload and working independently within your area of competence while recognising when guidance is required. Strong teamwork skills are essential, as you will need to understand how broader project factors influence your design while also ensuring local team objectives are met to satisfy all stakeholders.

Experience in designing seismically classified steel platforms and structures from concept to detailed design would be beneficial. Familiarity with 3D modelling and structural analysis tools, as well as knowledge of pressurised water reactors (PWRs), would be advantageous.

Experience in the nuclear sector and plant layout engineering will be highly regarded. An understanding of Eurocodes related to civil engineering, particularly in the design of fastenings and anchorages in concrete, along with expertise in reinforced and pre-stressed concrete structures, would be valuable. Additionally, knowledge of design and layout constraints, as well as anchorage design principles, is desirable.

If this sounds like you then we’d love to hear from you!

Closing date for applications: 12th February 2025

Success is personal. It’s your journey, powered by us. Join us and we’ll help Britain achieve Net Zero, together.
