Steelwork Engineer
Location: Hinkley Point C
Do you have a very technical mindset and enjoy carrying out calculation and verification tasks? Do you show strong interpersonal, stakeholder management and communication skills? Are you able to think independently, prioritize tasks, handle multiple interfaces, and consistently meet commitments and deadlines?
If so, come and join EDF as a Steelwork Engineer!
The Opportunity
EDF EPR Engineering UK (EPR-E) is tasked with delivering the design for several nuclear island (NI) buildings, systems, and equipment contracts for the Hinkley Point C EPR Project. This involves working through an integrated team, supporting HPC construction and commissioning efforts, and preparing design replication feasibility and engineering activities for the Sizewell C Project. As a result, a Technical Directorate is being established to oversee the engineering disciplines and technical expertise needed to successfully deliver these projects through EPR-E’s integrated teams.
In the frame of HPC plant construction, The Joint Design Organization (JDO) is an integrated team composed of teams from: the HPC Client (NNB), who leads the JDO; EDVANCE and CNEPE and Contractors who have carried out the detailed design studies01. As part of its scope of delegation, JDO provides technical support at the HPC EPR site for the resolution of the various problems arising during the construction phases and later during the testing and commissioning operations.
We are looking to recruit a Steelwork Engineer to join the project.

What you’ll be doing
As the JDO Steelwork Engineer, you will be responsible for answering requests related to your assigned building or steelworks. You will perform calculations and update the relevant notes. You will benefit from the support of your team members, the technical experts within the team, the back office in Bristol, and the Edvance Expert Network if needed. This will allow you to update and modify deliverables, ensuring they meet quality standards.
Your responsibilities include answering requests within your scope, leading and overseeing the production of relevant deliverables, and coordinating with the back-office regarding design interfaces. You’ll also engage with the client (project and intelligent customer) to support the overall project and collaborate with other disciplines within the JDO to ensure the overall success of the project. Additionally, you’ll support the JDO Steelwork Team Lead by addressing the team’s broader needs, related to production, technical, and quality matters.
Under the delegation of the JDO Steelwork Discipline Lead, you’ll be responsible for checking updates of deliverables initially issued by the back-office teams and later modified by the JDO teams. You'll ensure the continuity and consistency of the designs modified by the JDO teams, verifying compliance with the methods, referential, tools, processes, and delegated authority from the back-office teams. It will also be your duty to protect the interests of the Responsible Designer in the JDO, in particular with respect to topics such as intellectual property and responsibility of the Responsible Designer further to modification of their design by the JDO teams.
Finally, you’ll be expected to produce high-quality, timely deliverables to support the project’s success.
Who you are
To succeed in this role, you should have experience as a Steelwork Engineer, designing structures within the nuclear industry, or have a background on subjects at the interface between design and construction. You’ll need hands-on experience with preparing calculation notes and understanding mechanical behaviour. Familiarity with Eurocode 2 and an understanding of safety requirements are also recommended to effectively respond to requests. Additionally, experience working in a multicultural environment will be valuable. Experience in civil or MEH construction would be a bonus.
Knowledge of the HPC project or previous EPR projects, and associated studies and doctrines would be a significant asset in this role. Previous experience working with Edvance and/or EDF-Framatome processes, with a particular emphasis on Engineering Sequence and Quality procedures (P3), is also beneficial. Proficiency in 2D and 3D design software such as Navisworks, PDMS, TEKLA, and AUTOCAD (or similar applications) is essential, as well as with FEA design software like RSTAB (or similar 3D SW calculation software).
A strategic perspective, proactive approach, and the ability to write clear, well-structured technical documents are also crucial, along with strong logical thinking to ensure high-quality deliverables and effectively manage project complexities.
This role requires BPSS (Baseline Personnel Security Standard) clearance.
If this sounds like you then we’d love to hear from you!
Closing date for applications: 27th November 2024
