The Opportunity

EDVANCE, a company created on June 1, 2017 and owned 80% by EDF and 20% by Framatome, is a subsidiary of EDF, in charge of the design (basic design) and the realization (studies, procurement, erection, testing and commissioning) of nuclear islands for new projects in France and worldwide. Spearhead of the French nuclear industry, it aims thru its objectives and challenges of economic competitiveness and performance, to position itself sustainably in nuclear markets internationally and those of the renewal of the French fleet.

In particular, EDVANCE is responsible for the design and construction of the nuclear island for the Hinkley Point C project and for the design of the EPR2, an optimized EPR model incorporating the feedback from the ongoing EPR projects. It will also carry out new nuclear offers and projects in France and abroad.

Within Edvance, Commissioning Department is the reference entity for:
• Commissioning Engineering:
o Commissioning test doctrine elaboration,
o Commissioning skills animation and support,
o Commissioning test programs definition,
o Technical support to sites during commissioning phase
o Test results analysis and validation, in particular regarding functional requirement
• Commissioning test performance on site

For HPC project, Commissioning department (ESS), based in Montrouge, is involved in Commissioning documentation preparation, as part of the contractual commissioning file issued to the customer NNB.

This activity is complemented by the production of Plat-form Test Procedures (PTP) aiming at validating I&C functions embedded into SPPA-T2000 control system. The participation of the test execution at test bay (Paris suburbs) is also part of the mission.

The customer is then responsible for Commissioning test performance at Hinkley Point site.

Nevertheless, Edvance plans to provide an assistance to the customer for test performance on site, analysis of test results and treatment of potential test anomalies during this phase.

In order to prefigure and secure the future teams involved in site commissioning activities, a commissioning group is created in 2020 within Edvance UK structure (ECW) in Bristol, aiming at developing local commissioning skills, through the writing of a part of the commissioning documentation to be delivered by Edvance. The position subject to that job description is part of the ECW section.

Those skills will further be able to be part of the future site commissioning teams.

The Person

Under the responsibility of the discipline Lead, the Commissioning Engineer will be entrusted with the production and/or surveillance of a set of deliverables. As far as practicable, it will be striven to assign to a given team member the entire documentation related a system in a bid to increase his/her deep understanding of the system functions or operating modes.

Following items make up the scope of deliverables:
• Plat-form Test Procedure (PTP) and its related study file
• Sufficiency Analysis Note (SAN) and its related study file demonstrating the proper test coverage of the safety functions assigned to a system
• System Commissioning Programme (SCP) and its related study file
• Commissioning Procedures (CP) and its related study file

Such activity is based on design documentation, Edvance engineering methods, standards and processes as well as commissioning documentation and feedback from other EPRs.

In an attempt to depict the main steps of the delivery process, following breakdown is proposed (without being exhaustive):
1. Preparatory phase
• Confirm the project data & internal organization with the discipline Lead (budget, time schedule, author – checker – approver)
• Identify the relevant stakeholders and means
• Check the maturity of the input data against RC2 CS2 configuration and/or upcoming changes
• Collect OPEX from other EPR projects
• Record risks in the related register and propose mitigation plan, if any
• Arrange pre-job brief / kick-off meeting
• Open the study file
2. Execution phase
• Produce the deliverables in compliance with Edvance engineering procedures and taking into account OPEX from other EPR projects
• Get the contribution of relevant stakeholders / experts
• Get the deliverables checked by the relevant parties – resolve outstanding issues and comments
• Survey commissioning deliverables elaborated by others (e.g. contractors) with respect to project standards
• Feed the study file as tasks evolve
3. Monitoring phase
• Report progress towards initial time schedule & budget
• Update risk register on a need basis
4. Close out phase
• Get approval of the deliverable by the relevant parties without comments (code A)
• Store both the deliverable and study file in the EDMS duly checked

The Commissioning Engineer may be assigned to tasks outside the initial discipline depending on the needs of the project.

Frequent travels to France (possibly Germany) are needed. Main reasons (but not limited to) are technical meetings with engineering departments and participation in the I&C plat-form tests. Business trips to the HPC site and other facilities in the UK are also expected.
