Bristol/Bridgwater, Permanent, Competitive Salary & Benefits

A career that will deliver change. Together, we’ll help Britain achieve net zero.

The Opportunity

Be part of one of the most exciting and challenging projects within EDF, as we continue to lead the rebirth of nuclear in the UK. At Hinkley Point C (HPC) we are building two new nuclear reactors (European Pressurised Water Reactor-EPR), the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK providing low carbon electricity for around six million homes.

Marking a significant milestone in the revitalisation of our nuclear power industry, HPC will make a major contribution to the UK’s move to reduce carbon emissions.

Bringing the plant to life is the job of the HPC commissioning team which will lead the transition from construction to operation. We are currently recruiting exceptional people to join our I&C Commissioning Delivery team in several key roles.

Every member of the Commissioning team plays a part in providing assurance to our regulators that we can safely load fuel into the HPC reactors and begin the journey of providing safe, clean electricity to meet around 7% of the UK’s demand for generations to come.

The HPC plant includes a variety of I&C technologies, both computerised and non-computerised, implementing systems that perform monitoring, control and protection functions for nuclear and conventional plant. You will be part of a team that is responsible for the commissioning of systems associated with networks, communications, security and environmental monitoring. This team also has a key role in the provision of temporary infrastructure using similar technologies to support the Commissioning programme from the start of site activities.

The Role

You will be a member of one of the five I&C Commissioning Delivery teams, reporting to an I&C Team Manager. The Commissioning Temporary Control Room (TCR) will be installed in 2022 in order to monitor the plant prior to its operation. The TCR systems will include a common industrial network, a DECT-IP communications system, SCADA and security monitoring systems. This infrastructure will be deployed across the site for both units and may be operational until 2027.

Two roles are available: one with a bias towards CCTV and video management systems, the other with a bias towards communications systems.

The main activities for the temporary systems are to:
-    Provide the technical specifications for the temporary communication system, based on a wireless technology such as DECT-IP or similar.
-    Provide the technical specifications for the temporary Network and CCTV/Security system.
-    Clarify interfaces between the temporary network and the connected systems.
-    Provide technical support to select suitable suppliers.
-    Ensure an interface with the suppliers in all stages of the life cycle of the TCR Project (Design, manufacturing, Factory/Site acceptance testing, commissioning, operation and maintenance).
-    Provide support to the commissioning and operations teams who will operate the systems.
-    Support future development and modification of the temporary systems as required.

You will also play a key role in the commissioning team for the permanent communications and security systems, the main activities being:
-    Understand and challenge a complex network infrastructure during the design and factory acceptance tests, for conventional and industrial networks,
-    Understand and challenge a complex CCTV system design and associated factory acceptance tests.
-    Commissioning preparation: Depending on the supplier’s contract scope, write commissioning test procedures/instructions or check and validate the suppliers’ documentation.
-    Schedule commissioning works.
-    Provide efficient organisation of commissioning tasks delivering test and validation activities according to the programme time scheduled.
-    Develop knowledge and skills in the commissioning of a complex network, security and communication system.
-    Lead a commissioning team of engineers and technicians to perform commissioning tests and to supervise supplier and contractor activities.
-    Update and communicate KPIs for the progress of commissioning works.

The Skills

•    A technical qualification (degree preferred) in a relevant discipline. A speciality in networks, wireless communications, CCTV or security management would be a plus.
•    Engineering background with experience of working with complex network, communication or security systems, ideally in an industrial environment.
•    Detailed understanding of installation constraints in a complex new build environment.
•    Able to challenge and to accept challenge in a positive manner.
•    Comfortable in a dynamic and multi-cultural environment.
•    Understands the need for technical and administrative rigour in the nuclear industry.
•    Excellent communication and organisational skills, able to develop relationships and maintain effective networks both internally and with external partners.
•    Keen to be involved in other areas, such as industrial monitoring, alarm and automation systems.

•    Knowledge in at least one of the following Network platforms: Cisco, Avaya, Allied Telesis.
•    Knowledge in at least one of the following VMS platforms: AVIGILON, MILESTONE, GENETEC.
•    Good understanding of commissioning work in a complex new construction environment (procedures, operations and/or maintenance).
•    Knowledge and experience of industrial networks supporting communication, security or automation systems.
•    Good knowledge and experience of working with LAN, WAN, Mesh WiFi, TCP/IP based on Cisco or similar.
•    Good knowledge of IP communication in an industrial environment, e.g. DECT-IP or similar.
•    Good understanding in security rules using filtering, Access list, VPN, firewalling, etc. and comfortable with TelNet commands in a network context.
