Mechanical Calculation Engineer

Aztec West, Bristol - with flexibility of working from home, minimum 3 days a week in the office.

Do you have exceptional communication skills, with expertise in mechanical principles? Are you skilled in mechanical simulations and proficient in Python programming to develop advanced computational tools? If so, join EDF as a Mechanical Calculation Engineer!

The Opportunity

EDF EPR Engineering UK (EPR-E) is tasked with delivering the design for several nuclear island (NI) buildings, systems, and equipment contracts for the Hinkley Point C EPR Project. This involves working through an integrated team, supporting HPC construction and commissioning efforts, and preparing design replication feasibility and engineering activities for the Sizewell C Project. As a result, a Technical Directorate is being established to oversee the engineering disciplines and technical expertise needed to successfully deliver these projects through EPR-E’s integrated teams.

As a Mechanical Calculation Engineer, you’ll be at the heart of the Hinkley Point C project, driving the precision and expertise needed to finalise the design of a vast and critical piping network. Your work will be essential in driving the core infrastructure of this pioneering nuclear energy project.

Pay, benefits and culture

Alongside a salary circa £52,393 and a market-leading pension scheme, your package will include a range of benefits, from the big and formal to the small and personal.

We’re talking about everything from enhanced parental leave to electric vehicle leasing, health insurance to product discounts, critical illness insurance to technology vouchers, gym membership to season ticket loans.

At EDF UK, we embrace flexibility while recognising that everyone's working needs are different. Whether you're in our office spaces, on site, or working remotely, we promote an environment that supports collaboration, connection, and comfort. No matter where you are, our priority is to make sure you feel safe, valued, and celebrated.

That’s why we support you to pursue a career that’s unique to you. Because success is personal.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll ensure the integrity of pipe network designs and their supporting structures by performing detailed calculations for various load scenarios, including dead weight, thermal expansion, and seismic activity.

You’ll apply your expertise in element analysis tools like Pipestress and RSTAB, combined with essential Python programming skills, to create specialised tools and streamline design workflows.

Additionally, you’ll identify opportunities for continuous improvement and collaborate with stakeholders to enhance processes while mentoring team members to achieve both individual and collective goals.

Who you are

You’ll bring exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, along with knowledge of mechanical principles such as modal and static analysis. Expertise in mechanical simulations using finite element methods and proficiency in Python programming for developing computational tools are essential.

Additionally, you’ll have experience with CAD software for design and modelling, with a solid understanding of industry standards and regulatory compliance in mechanical engineering. Your innovative problem-solving abilities will empower you to address complex engineering challenges, while your dedication to continuous learning will keep you at the forefront of technological advancements. This role also requires collaboration and the ability to build and maintain effective relationships at all levels of the organisation.

If this sounds like you then we’d love to hear from you!
