The Opportunity


The HPC central Environment Team (based in Aztec West, Bristol) is currently looking to recruit an Environment Technical Specialist to join the Conventional Environmental Technical Team.  The team is responsible for ensuring that the conventional systems and buildings of HPC are designed in line with best practice and in compliance with all relevant environmental legislation.  It is also responsible for leading the regulatory interface on these topics and demonstrating that the final design of HPC is in concurrence with the relevant operational environmental permits, legislation, and represents Best Available Techniques (BAT). 

The Person

 

Your Day to Day Responsibilities: 

 

•    As an Environment Technical Specialist, you will be responsible for providing environmental design assurance across a number of conventional systems at HPC.  You might find yourself working with effluent systems, backup combustion plant, fish protection systems, HVAC, drainage, and cooling water systems.  
•    In addition to the design assurance work, you’ll also be expected to support and lead relevant regulatory engagement activities, primarily with the Environment Agency.
•    You will also work closely with the rest of the wider Environment Team to provide support in line with a “best athlete” approach to delivery.  You will also provide direct support to the Head of Environment and the Environment Managers to ensure relevant company processes and governance arrangements are complied with at all times. 
 

The Skills

 

To be successful in the role, you will be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

 

Essential:

 

•    Broad knowledge of the UK environment regulatory framework and experience in implementing those requirements
•    Degree qualified or equivalent in an environment or related discipline
•    Working with and developing good relationships with environmental regulators (e.g. Environment Agency, Natural England, Marine Management Organisation, etc.)
•    Experience in working with Environmental Permits including preparing applications, engagement with regulators, and managing compliance
•    A well-developed skill-set with regard to communication with, and management of consultants and contractors.
•    Flexibility, adaptability, autonomy, and a strong questioning attitude.

 

Desirable:

 

•    Experience of working within the nuclear or other high hazard industry.
•    Experience in working with effluent treatment systems and compliance with Water Discharge Activity and/or Industrial Emissions Directive (Installation) Environmental Permits.
•    Knowledge and experience of working with Appropriate Assessments under the Conservation of Species and Habitats Regulations 2017
•    Membership of professional environmental institution and Chartered Environmentalist (or equivalent).
