The Opportunity


Be part of one of the most exciting and ambitious projects within EDF, as we continue to lead the rebirth of nuclear in the UK. At Hinkley Point C (HPC) we are building two new nuclear reactors (European Pressurised Water Reactor-EPR), the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK providing low carbon electricity for around six million homes. 


Marking a significant milestone in the revitalisation of our nuclear power industry, HPC will make a major contribution to the UK’s move to reduce carbon emissions. 


As the Electrical Design Manager, you will manage a team of approximately 12 engineers and be responsible for delivering the design of the Ancillary Buildings site wide electrical systems including backup technologies, IT and Communication systems and the Security Systems for the operational HPC site. The design scope covers requirements capture, contract specification through to review and acceptance of the design and handover to other parties for execution design, manufacture and installation. 

The Role


•    Manage a team of engineers, in terms of recruitment, career and skills development, performance management, resource planning, global team organisation.
•    Manage the activity of the team in order to deliver the design to the delivery programmes with the right level of safety/quality and on time and on budget:
•    Work planning, scheduling, task allocation
•    Risk and open point management
•    Sub-contractor and budget management.
•    Technical leadership in the Electrical field, including integration with other scopes and configuration management. The Team Manager ensures that the right quality arrangements and skills are in place in order to deliver the right level of quality and safety.
•    For nuclear safety related scope, the Team Manager ensures that the role of Intelligent Customer is carried out within the team, potentially with the support of the Technical Client Organisation (TCO).
•    The team also discharges the responsibilities of the Principle Designer for the relevant scope in accordance with the CDM (2015) Regulations.
•    Develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, in France and the UK, the key ones being the Design Delivery Branch Buildings and Roads & Networks teams, the MEH (mech, elec, HVAC) alliance engineering team, MEH delivery programme, other design entities (Edvance and CNEPE).
•    Support organisational learning, helping in the identification, understanding and the effective resolution of issues.


The Skills


•    Experience in Electrical distribution, building services and back-up supply system design and associated equipment or IT & comms and security system design.
•    Knowledge of design process and design activities in a regulated environment.
•    Experience of managing contractors, consultants and other advisors throughout large and complex construction projects, in a regulated environment.
•    Experience of Leadership and/or undeniable line management skills and motivation.
•    Knowledge of Health & Safety legislation including CDM and Nuclear Site License requirements.
•    Strong problem solving and decision making skills.
•    Excellent organisational skills.
•    Good communication skills and ability to build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholder.
•    Experience of working within a project reference configuration environment and authoring/approving design change modifications


•    Knowledge/experience of design activities related to the Conventional Industry (RIBA, BSRIA).
•    Previous undeniable project management experience.
