The Opportunity

The UK European Pressurised-water Reactor (EPR) Design Centre further develops EDF’s nuclear expertise in Britain with a centre where leading companies can come together with EDF to support Hinkley Point C (HPC) and other UK EPR projects in their design, build and commissioning. Led by EDF’s new nuclear engineering division (DIPNN UK) and Edvance UK, the Centre is based in Aztec West, Bristol. Around 700 people from different companies will be employed there by 2021, bringing an additional 300 jobs to Britain to support HPC and Sizewell C’s design, construction and commissioning. 

This role sits in the UK team in charge of the design of the Conventional Island for the Sizewell C Project. This UK team is part of the Responsible Designer (CNEPE in France) responsible of the overall design of Structures/Systems/Components of the Conventional Island, Balance of Plant and Heat Sink. The UK team will develop UK localised designs and contributes to the transfer of scope from France to the UK.


As Civil Engineer you will ensure the production and monitoring of the civil engineering of the buildings on the conventional island to which you are assigned and propose technical solutions. Reporting to the Head of UK CI-BOP Team, you will work in an international environment with the objective of implementing the SZC replication strategy, i.e. re-use designs developed for HPC.

The Person


In this role you will be accountable for:


Civil Engineering

•    Receive, analyse and verify the consistency of the input data
•    Produce the deliverables for which you are responsible (assumption notes, technical specifications, calculation notes)
•    Perform technical verifications of civil engineering documents for your building
•    Create, maintain and be responsible for the Design Risk Register


Support in the monitoring of the main civil engineering and equipment contracts

•    Make the necessary clarifications to the documents within Conventional Island’s scope
•    Contribute to surveillance of civil execution drawings
•    Contribute to surveillance of the anchorages designed by the equipment suppliers
•    Provide support in dealing with the non-conformity and adaptation reports issued by the contractor and relays the modifications to the design office

The Skills


To be successful in this role you should be able to demonstrate:

•    Civil Engineer Degree or equivalent experience, including experience in a design office  
•    Knowledge/understanding of the Eurocodes related to civil engineering, especially the design of fastenings in concrete
•    Knowledge and understanding of relevant Health and Safety regulations
•    Knowledge of the design of reinforced concrete and pre-stressed concrete structures.  



•    Knowledge of the design of steelwork structures 
•    Knows how to deal with the design and layout constraints
•    Experience in the nuclear sector
•    Experience in plant layout engineering
