Environmental Safety Engineer - FTC

The Opportunity

The Environment Group supports multiple functions at Hinkley Point B Power Station including Environmental permit compliance, Sewage treatment plant oversight, Radiochemistry, Chemistry monitoring, Radiological protection, Solid radioactive waste management, processing and dispatch and the management of radioactive liquid and gaseous discharges.

 

The multidiscipline Environment Group collaborates with the Engineering, Operations and other departments across the power station.  The primary goal for the Environment Group is to ensure safe and compliant management of environmental and radiological discharges/waste throughout the defueling and waste & decommissioning life phases and hence this opportunity offers great prospects for maintaining your career at Hinkley Point B.

 

This role is being offered on a fixed term contract up to March 2026.

 

Pay, benefits and culture

 

The salary range associated with this role is between £44,112 – 92,778 however the starting salary for this appointment will be within the range of £44,112 – £66,648 and you’ll be appointed based on the parameters outlined in the Company Agreement as well as your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications.

What you’ll be doing

 

We are looking for individuals to support the specialists in the Group to ensure the correct controls are in place to minimise environmental risk and maintain environmental permit compliance.  In addition, you will be responsible for:

 

  • Reviewing and reporting of environmental issues to the Environment Group Head,
  • Linking disparate information, understanding trends and patterns with numerical data, and turning these into ideas, frameworks or proposals which are consistent with the needs of the business,
  • Taking timely and appropriate action, recognising/considering the implications of decisions, particularly relating to environmental discharges, waste production and permit compliance,
  • Developing and maintaining effective relationships with group and station stakeholders,
  • Compliance reporting to the specialists and Group Head.
  • Monitoring of the plant and operational activities.

 

Who you are

 

To be successful for this role, you will have a relevant HNC as a minimum. A Degree in a relevant subject area or working towards one may be advantageous. Having a good working knowledge in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics, you will be able to apply this knowledge to a broad range of normal work activities in a variety of circumstances.

 

You will be able to demonstrate your ability to share solutions, to resolve situations in new or unfamiliar circumstances and can identify and manage consequences of implementation of such solutions.  A local training programme will be delivered by the Environment Group to the successful applicant. 

 

You will be able to manage large amounts of numerical data on a variety of electronic database systems such as Excel or a LIMS.

To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Security Vetting which will, ordinarily, require you to have been a resident of the UK for at least 3 of the last 5 years.
