Civil Engineering Industrial Placement 2020

Welcome to EDF Energy and welcome to Generation Electric!

We're proud to be Europe’s largest generator of sustainable, low carbon energy; committed to rolling out Electric mobility as standard, self-sufficiency and ownership of energy consumption through smart, innovative products which help decarbonise homes & businesses. We believe that, together, we can create a cleaner, low-carbon future.

Introducing Generation Electric: They are leading a quiet revolution shaping the future of sustainable living and working through low carbon electricity.  They are switching to low carbon energy sources, storing it in their homes and then selling it back to the grid and using electricity to power their movement. They are the pioneers of a better, more sustainable future for our planet.

And, at the forefront of the innovations supporting Generation Electric you’ll find all of us: the people of EDF Energy.

Take your next step and join us.  We believe that generating and supplying electricity isn’t just about power, it’s about the power to transform lives and futures.

The Opportunity:

An Industrial Placement role working on the design and construction of Hinkley Point C power station. In this exciting industrial placement the candidate will learn how nuclear structures are designed and experience the challenges of providing design and construction to be compliant with the UK nuclear regulatory requirements. The candidate will be based either on site or in one of the design or delivery offices. The exact nature of the role will depend on where the candidate is based, typically the role will be under the guidance of an experienced engineer.

We are building two new nuclear reactors at Hinkley Point C in Somerset, the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK providing low-carbon electricity for around six million homes. This is an excellent opportunity to gain exposure to a large complex project of international importance.

Taking on a real job at a junior level, you'll have the opportunity to learn through hands-on experience under the guidance of highly skilled and experienced colleagues. Most of what you learn will be on the job, with support from your mentor and the teams you work in. Some industrial placements come with opportunities for further technical training as needed.

You’ll be based at one of the Hinkley Point C offices in or around Bristol or at the Hinkley Point C site in Somerset.

It’s worth noting that we don’t offer relocation help for Industrial Placements. So if the placement you’re applying for isn’t in your local area, you’ll need to be able to cover the cost of moving to and living there yourself.

At telephone interview stage, you will be given the option to discuss any preference on location. We will match successful applicants to placements taking location preference in to consideration together with your degree discipline and business needs.

The Future:

After you've completed your industrial placements, you should know for sure whether you want to be part of the UK's energy future. If all goes well, we hope to see you back at EDF Energy after university, on one of our gradaute programmes.

The Skills:

The successful candidate will have a logical mind, strong problem solving and communication skills, and demonstrate a willingness to learn. They will have an ability to interact within a team environment, display professionalism within a work setting and have both a questioning and challenging attitude. Of key importance is a willingness to get involved with various tasks, and provide support as required.
