Overview

This placement offers the opportunity to work as part of our EDF R&D UK Centre which is an integral part of the EDF Group R&D international network.  The strategy of the centre is to lead research and development for EDF, creating value, preparing for future challenges and unlocking opportunities for the business.

For 2021 we’re offering placement opportunities working with the following teams:

If you join our Modelling and Simulation team you’ll be contributing to the work on lifetime extensions of our current fleet of nuclear power plants. Specifically, the integrity of the graphite cores which is experiencing significant modifications with ageing due to oxidation and irradiation. As the graphite ages, the components are likely to crack. You’ll be working largely with models and simulations of the plant to ensure safe lifetime extensions.

If you secure a position with Natural Hazards team you will be exposed to the R&D challenges in the areas of environment and natural hazards including meteorology, ocean sciences, marine biology, space weather and climate change. You’ll get the opportunity to work with key stakeholders to underpin the operations of our current fleet of nuclear power stations as well as the new build development projects.

In the Waste and Decommissioning team, you’ll be assisting research engineers in a technical capacity to deliver a research project within one of the four core technology themes linked to the decommissioning strategy.

Training

Most of what you learn will be on the job, with support from your mentor and the teams you work in. Some industrial placements come with opportunities for further technical training as needed.
