Our selection process is designed to get the best out of you, while helping you see if we’re the right company for you as you progress. Here are the five stages, followed by some handy advice to help you get your application right.
When you’ve chosen the right scheme for you, start by registering with our application system and completing our online application. It asks for some key information (contact details, qualifications, work experience, your motivation for applying to EDF Energy) plus some competency-based questions to give us an early idea of how well you might get on working here.
Our recruitment team will need to verify the information you give us in order to progress your application, so please answer truthfully, accurately and fully. Please also note that we can’t accept CVs.
If we like the look of your application, we’ll ask you to complete some online numerical and logical reasoning tests. Bear in mind that you might find yourself taking these tests again under more controlled conditions as part of stage 4, so this is good preparation for you as well as being insightful for us.
It’s not always easy to convey your best qualities and experiences in an online form. Get through the online stages and you’ll have the chance to tell us more about yourself during a short telephone interview. As well as giving more evidence of the skills and qualities we’re looking for, you’ll be able to show us you’ve given careful thought to your career choice.
Impress us over the phone and you’ll be invited to our assessment centre. Here you’ll take part in various exercises designed to show us whether you have the behaviours to be a hit on our Graduate Programmes or Industrial Placements. We’ll get to see how well you approach tasks, deal with issues and work with others. You’ll get to learn more about us, our culture, our people and our programmes.
If everything goes well through these stages, we’ll make you an offer as soon as possible after the assessment centre. If you accept, congratulations on the official start of a very exciting and rewarding career with EDF Energy.
What can you do to give yourself the best chance to impressing us at every stage of the selection process?
Preparation pays. Be sure to research our sector and the role thoroughly before starting on your application.
Be honest and accurate. Complete all sections truthfully and accurately – the information you give us will be reviewed.
If it’s relevant, include it. Remember we can’t shortlist you on information you haven’t provided in your application.
Keep to the word limit. Keep your answers succinct and relevant to the question being asked.
Don’t make anything up. It’s common sense but worth reiterating: honesty really is the best policy!
Give it your undivided attention. Give yourself the best possible chance by finding the right place to complete the test – somewhere quiet where you won’t be disturbed.
Read the instructions carefully. Before you start, you'll also get to complete some sample questions to see what's required.
Be quick, accurate and thorough. The tests are timed, but read each one carefully to make sure you know what's required in your answer – especially where multiple choice options look similar.
Be prepared. You can get further advice and even take a practice test by clicking here.
Do your research. Interviewers and assessors love to see passionate interest in their business and wider industry, so take the time to do some homework.
Review your personal goals. We want to hear you speak openly and honestly about your ambitions and how you plan to achieve them. Be positive, alert and enthusiastic.
Turn negatives into positives. What did you learn from a negative experience? How did you turn the situation around? Be frank and honest – evading or distorting the facts rarely pays off.
Prepare for the big questions. Why do you want the job? How will you do well in it? What are your strengths? Your biggest achievements? What examples do you have, academic and otherwise, to back all this up? Anything else?
Take your time. Listen to the question, consider why it’s being asked and think about how it applies to the role. Don’t feel you have to blurt out instant answers and never be afraid to ask for more time to consider your response. Ask us to repeat or rephrase any question you don’t properly hear or understand.
Ask your own questions. An interview is a two-way process. Show how insightful, informed and interested you are with a couple of relevant and well-researched questions of your own.
Seek feedback afterwards. Whether or not you’ve been successful, it’s really valuable to know how you got on so you can make improvements in the future.
Be relaxed, refreshed and ready. We know there’ll probably be some nerves beforehand, but try to get a good night’s sleep and stay upbeat. Rest assured, we want to see you do well, so we’ll do our best to put you at ease once you’re here.
Keep hydrated and eat sensibly. The better your level of physical energy, the higher your concentration, the sharper your focus, the better you’ll perform on the day.
Be yourself. The purpose of the centre is to find out about you; to see how well you’d fit in at EDF Energy. Don’t try to act as the person you think we’re looking for. All we want to see is you at your best.
Be a team player. We want to see how you work in a team to approach and resolve tasks, you’ll need to contribute to group discussions to enable us to assess you properly.
Enjoy yourself! Set out with a positive mindset and the chances are you’ll not only find it a more pleasurable experience, but also be more relaxed, natural and on the ball on the day.
